South Orange, N.J. - No. 9 Georgetown narrowed a halftime deficit to five points early in the second half, but Seton Hall connected on 61.0 percent of its shots from the field en route to a 73-55 win over the Hoyas at the Prudential Center Tuesday night.
Freshman forward Otto Porter (Sikeston, Mo./Scott County Central) scored eight points and had six rebounds to lead Georgetown, while junior forward Hollis Thompson (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) scored eight points and had six rebounds, senior guard Jason Clark (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) added five points and senior center Henry Sims (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) chipped in seven points, three rebounds and two assists.
Georgetown trailed by seven points at the break, but cut the lead to five, 35-30, on a dunk from Sims on the opening possession of the second half. A three-pointer from Thompson cut the lead to 39-33 with 17:56 to play in the game, but that was as close as it would get.
Seton Hall used an 8-1 spurt over 3:34 and took a 47-34 lead on a jumper from Brandon Mobley with 14:21 to play in the game. The Hoyas cut the lead to 52-40 on a layup from freshman forward Greg Whittington (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) with 10:39 left, but an 11-5 SHU run, capped by a three-pointer from Jordan Theodore, who scored a game-high 29 points, gave the Pirates a 63-45 lead.
Georgetown fell behind at the break after a hot-shooting first half from the Pirates, who connected on 59.1 percent of their shots from the field (13-of-22) en route to a 35-28 lead.
Seton Hall led 15-11 on a three-pointer from Fuquan Edwin, but a layup from freshman forward Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./Georgetown Prep) and a three-pointer from classmate Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) gave GU a 16-15 lead with 9:07 to play. Seton Hall, however, took the lead back on a dunk from Brandon Mobley and opened up a six-point lead, 22-16, on a three-pointer from Theodore.
Consecutive three-pointers from Whittington and Clark tied the game at 22-all with 6:00 left, but an 11-4 run over 4:37 - during which the Hoyas hit only one field goal - gave SHU a 33-26 lead on a Theodore three-pointer. A layup from Porter cut the lead to five points, but Theodore free throws gave the Pirates the seven-point lead.
The Hoyas hit 40l.0 percent of their field goals (19-of-47), were 5-of-15 from three-point land (33.3%) and hit 12-of-15 free throws (80.0%). GU held a 26-23 advantage on the glass.
The Seton Hall field goal percentage was the highest mark against Georgetown since Baylor hit 60.9 percent of its field goals on March 18, 2009 in the NIT.
Georgetown returns home this weekend and hosts Villanova on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Verizon Center. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. and the game will be shown live on CBS, with Spero Dedes and Bob Wenzel calling all of the action. The game can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM.
