In Head Coach Patrick Ewing's debut back with the Hoyas, the Georgetown men's basketball team tipped off the 2017-18 season by clinching its first win, defeating the Jacksonville Dolphins in the newly-named Capital One Arena.
The team was led by their junior frontcourt of Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) and Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.]). Govan posted a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds while Derrickson also posted 20 points along with eight rebounds. Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J/St. Anthony) recorded nine points and three assists in his sophomore debut while Jonathan Mulmore (New Orleans, La/Redemption Christian [Texas]/Allegany) began his senior campaign by scoring five points and dishing out seven assists.
Following halftime, the Dolphins looked to come out aggressive and erase their 16-point deficit, but a 15-4 run sparked by Govan and Derrickson countered back. Georgetown's largest lead (24) came late in the second half and the Blue & Gray shot 45.6 percent from the field for the game.
Many Georgetown University basketball alumni and friends were in attendance to support Coach Ewing and his team, including Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning, Otto Porter Jr., Michael Jordan and Jeff Van Gundy.
Georgetown is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Capital One Arena hosting Mount. St. Mary's. Tipoff is slated for 7 pm and will be broadcast on FS2.
