Georgetown Quotes

Head Coach John Thompson III

On Otto Porter's condition ...
I think he's coming along fine. I think he'll be available, but that's up to our medical staff, he's progressing. It's mild, it's not moderate and it's not serious.

On if he thought the Hoyas suffered from a lack of intensity ...
Liberty played extremely hard. They could have come in here hanging their heads and didn't. They fought and scrapped and that's a credit to their coach. From our perspective, we're trying to get ready for the future. So sometimes you have in different lineups that you want to see how they work and different combinations and people in different positions. It's hard to go through that and say let's not look at the scoreboard, let's remember what we're trying to accomplish right here.

On the Hoyas attention to detail on defense ...
That being said, I thought Liberty did an outstanding job of getting what they wanted, getting the shots that they wanted. They shot 52-percent from three and we have to be, we are, a very good three-point defensive team and that was not the case today. They got Sunday out at the park shots and they went in. Our attention to detail at the defensive end, I don't think was good all night. Our communication was not good all night, so regardless of the combinations coach has out there, we have to be better.

On the Hoyas stopping Davon Marshall ...
I thought he was key, just in looking at tape of him, he makes them go. He's a very good offensive player, he can get to the cup, he has deep range. Even then he still went 4-for-7 from three and that's not good from our perspective, great for him.

On adjusting without Otto Porter Jr ...
He's one of the key members of our team. He's one of our guys that has experience, so is it different without Otto? Absolutely, but we have to figure that out. We have to figure it out regardless of who is in foul trouble, who's down, who's injured we have to figure it out, because we have enough other people in that room where we have to step up and figure it out. Is it an adjustment process? I'd be misleading you if I said no, but that still shouldn't effect anything.

On Georgetown's defense ...
Our press has been effective, but our half-court defense leaves a lot to be desired. I thought our press was effective, that was the one part of the game where I thought our guys were attentive and sharp.

On Greg Whittington's performance ...
I said this sitting here after last game, Greg can do a lot of different things. He has that responsibility slash burden to do a lot of different things, so I don't think it's any more a surprise to look and see he scored points today than it was to look and see that he had 15 rebounds after the last game. He's going to have to do a lot of things to show up on the stat sheet, as well as a lot of things that don't show up on the stat sheet. I thought our communication tonight on defense was not good, which is one of the aspects, but Greg has a very good feel, he sees, he knows what he's supposed to be doing and he knows what everyone else is supposed to be doing, so that's something he has to do also.

On the team's decision-making in transition ...
I think we were better. The difference, with the exception of the very end, the last game the decisions were related to time and score, where you're coming, it's two three minutes, it's a tight game and now isn't the time to force that pass. We weren't necessarily in that position this time, but I think we executed well in transition.

Junior Forward Nate Lubick

On mindset entering game considering Otto Porter's absence and lack of size on team ...
I came in knowing that I needed to be aggressive, but no different than normal. Obviously there's a little bit of a make-up for scoring with Otto out, but I think that's how we have gotten ourselves in a little bit of trouble the past two games without Otto ...just in terms of staying with our offense and moving the ball. In terms of the way I thought, I don't think I went into the game saying I need to score more.

On how to improve communication on defense ...
Practice. That's something that just comes with chemistry, and we should have more of it. That's something that's going to be on the older guys, the guys who have played. I've said this the whole time, that we have sophomores who really aren't sophomores because they played so much last year. Greg and Otto are like that. I think that a bunch of us, the older guys, need to step up and demand it and make it a precedent.

On understanding that team is working towards building chemistry ...
With all due respect to Liberty, we've got some games coming up and we're preparing for some teams that are a little bit better than them. We use these games to find ourselves and to find what this team's identity is going to be. We have to go into every game acting like it's the last game we're going to play, and I think we've kind of struggled to do that in the past two games. I don't think our sense of urgency has really been there. Once some other guys step up and take a bigger role on this team in terms of leadership, myself included, I think that will be big in finding ourselves.

Sophomore Forward Greg Whittington

On attempting to be more vocal on defense ...
I tried to just have my teammates back the whole game, making sure they were doing the things we needed to do.

On wincing in pain late in the game ...
It was a little cramp. I'll be alright.

Liberty Quotes

Head Coach Dale Layer

Opening Statement
"I think that we probably caught Georgetown on a night that they weren't quite as inspired as they will be at later in the year, it's understandable. I thought we played our best that we've played. And it took every bit of our best just to kind of hang in there and not be a 30 point blowout. So I'm proud of our guys' effort and I'm proud that we continue to get better and that's all I ask of them."

On Georgetown's Defensive Effort
"I think that we struggled with Georgetown's length early. We worked really hard on it at in shoot around to try to be prepared for it but we can't really simulate that. I think we adjusted well to it, I think we kind of figured it out a little bit, as much as we could, but that first... 12 -0 run after we took a 4 nothing lead probably the difference in allowing us to not really get back in the game ever... but I thought we kind of hung in there and were able to at least make it respectable.

On Liberty's 3-Point Shooting
"I don't know that we can make 10 (3 point baskets) every night but we do have a good shooting team and Casey Roberts gave us a good lift from three, Davon (Marshall) is arguably as a good of a shooter that we have so we had some guys make some shots . You have too; you can't really expect to get much going at the rim against Georgetown with their length. Every time we got it in there, I think they blocked one shot seven times in the same possession and that's not something we are used too and you get by one guy and there's two others 6'8" or 6'9" waiting for you and we are not used to that. But it was really good experience for us and we are thankful that Georgetown allowed us to play."

Georgetown's Decision Making on Fast Breaks
"You know, when we had 16 turnovers it gave them a lot of opportunities. I don't look at necessarily what they do; I try to look at what we do. I thought we tried to get back, I thought we tried to take a couple of charges but dealing with their length we're giving up 6-8 inches in some of those positions and it makes it difficult to protect the basket."
