WASHINGTON - Three players scored in double figures and nine different players scored at least one basket as No. 16 Georgetown used a balanced attack en route to a 65-36 win over District rival American in front of 10,465 fans at Verizon Center on a snowy day in Washington. The win was the sixth-straight for the Hoyas, ranked No. 16 in the country by the Associated Press and No. 14 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll, who improved to 6-0 overall, while American falls to 1-7. The Hoyas led by 11 points, 34-23, at halftime and scored the first six points of the second half before American called a 30-second timeout. Sophomore guard Jason Clark (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) opened the half with a steal and breakaway dunk and classmate Greg Monroe (New Orleans, La./Helen Cox) followed with a pair of baskets to make it 40-23 with 17:26 to play. Those baskets were part of an 11-2 run over the first 4:30 of the second half as the Hoyas extended their lead to 20 points, 45-25, on a pair of free throws from junior guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) with 15:30 to play. The lead was 20 points again, 50-30, when GU went on a 13-2 run over 3:57 and took its biggest lead of the game, 63-32, on a layup from junior guard Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John's College HS) with 7:53 to play. American got no closer than 26 points the rest of the way. Early baskets from American - a three-pointer from Blake Jolivette, and layups from Stephen Lumpkins and Simon McCormack - gave the Eagles a 7-4 lead with 15:05 to play in the first half, but the Hoyas scored five-straight points and took a 9-7 lead on a jumper from freshman guard Hollis Thompson (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola). Tied at 9-all after a layup from American's Nick Hendra, Georgetown went on a 10-0 run over a span of 2:48 and took a 19-9 lead on a dunk from Clark. The Eagles pulled to within eight points, 24-16, after a pair of free throws from Hendra, but Georgetown responded with an 8-0 spurt over 2:49 and took a 32-16 advantage on a layup from Sims. American scored seven of the final nine points in the half and took a 34-23 lead into the half. Wright and sophomore center Henry Sims (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) scored 12 points apiece to lead the Hoyas, while junior Julian Vaughn (Vienna, Va./Oak Hill Academy) added 11 points and seven rebounds. Monroe added nine points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, while Clark added nine points and seven rebounds and Freeman added nine points. Georgetown plays next on Tuesday, visiting New York City and playing in Madison Square Garden against Butler in the first of two games in the Jimmy V Classic. Tipoff in the "World's Most Famous Arena" is slated for 7 p.m.
