WASHINGTON - Despite a late surge from the Howard University Bison, Georgetown men's basketball's team held on for the 81-67 win at Capital One Arena on Thursday night. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 7-0 on the year and Howard slips to 1-9. Junior center Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) recorded his fifth double-double of the season in the effort.

"The BIG EAST is such a strong conference - teams will make runs on us," Govan said of the tightness of the game. "We need to stay composed. Howard did a great job tonight and made a big run on us and never gave up. We needed that but glad we came out with a win."

For the sixth time this season Govan led the Hoyas in scoring, tallying 24 points. Adding 16 rebounds to match his career high, he notched his fifth double-double of the year. Govan was one of three in double figures as classmates Kaleb Johnson (South Hill, Va./The Carlisle School) added 18 and Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) tallied 16. Derrickson recorded nine boards while Johnson provided eight and both had four assists.

For the game, Georgetown shot 45.8 percent from the floor and hit 19-of-23 free throws. The Hoyas outrebounded the Bison, 41-25, and held a strong presence inside with 36 points in the paint to Howard's 18. Howard shot 46.6 percent from the floor and 43.5 percent from 3-point land while receiving 20 points from its bench.

The first half was a dominant affair for the Hoyas, particularly the junior trio of Derrickson, Govan and Johnson. The trio scored 20 of the first 25 points with freshman Jarmoko Pickett (Washington, D.C./Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) chipping in the other five on a 3-pointer and a layup. A jumper from sophomore Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J./St. Anthony) gave the Hoyas the 27-15 edge. Both teams traded buckets until a Derrickson jumper pushed the Hoyas ahead by 15 points, 35-20. The Hoyas continued to pull away as a pair of free throws from senior Jonathan Mulmore (New Orleans, La./Redemption Christian [Texas]/Allegany) and another bucket from Govan gave GU the 44-25 edge, its largest lead of the frame. The Hoyas went into the break with a 46-30 lead.

Georgetown led by as many as 20 points, 64-44, with 11:56 remaining in regulation. The Bison started to chip away at the lead and closed to within five, 70-65, with 4:06 on the clock. A layup from Johnson gave the Hoyas some breathing room and a Derrickson trey pushed the lead back to double digits, 75-65. The Blue & Gray held on through the final minutes, solidifying the 81-67 win.

Howard was led by Charles Williams, who scored 28 points on 11-for-18 shooting, hitting six 3-pointers for the game.

The Hoyas have a quick turnaround as they host North Carolina A&T University on Saturday, Dec. 9. Tipoff at Capital One Arena is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on FS2 with Rich Ackerman calling the play-by-play and Vin Parise providing color analysis. The game can be heard locally on 106.7 WFJK-FM with Rich Chvotkin handling the call.
