Georgetown 61, DePaul 54 December 31, 2013

Georgetown University Head Basketball Coach John Thompson III

On switching to a 1-2-2 defense late in the first half...
We were flat the whole game. I forget what the score was, but we were up by something and they went on a run (late in the first half). We started off in (the 1-2-2) and it wasn't effective, and we came back to it and it got our juices flowing a little bit. It was key, we went from down eight or nine until Aaron Bowen hit that shot at the buzzer and we went up four and our press had a lot to do with that...I thought it was effective throughout the game, to tell you the truth. I don't think we went on that much of a run in the second half, but we still had a few turnovers and it kept them on their heels a little bit.

On Georgetown's 2-3 defense in the second half...
I thought our zone was more effective on them than our man-to-man. You guys have seen me sit up here and talk about how we cover for each other and help each other and how our defense is getting better. But early in that first half the guy guarding the ball wasn't keeping his body in front of his man and the help wasn't there in the zone they stopped driving quite as much, although they still got in there a little bit.

On Moses Ayegba and Aaron Bowen's contributions...
They were extremely important, not just during that stretch, but throughout the whole game. Looking at the stat sheet I thought Moses had more than three blocks, maybe he didn't, but I felt like he had more than three blocks. He was a presence, he gave us energy, not just the blocks, but the rebounds. There was a key stretch when we were making that run in the first half where he made a hell of a defensive play...but I thought Moses was very, very good and AB also. We need those guys to come in with an infusion of smart energy. Sometimes guys run around like a chicken with its head cut off and don't accomplish anything. Today, I think both of them accomplished something with their effort.

On why Georgetown came out flat today...
I don't think we came out flat. We proceeded to get flat during the course of the game. I thought we came out OK. You have to attribute some of that to them, they're a big team. I think that they're pressure, for stretches in the first half, affected us. Not that we can't handle pressure, but I think we didn't stick what we were supposed to do a few times...The 13 turnovers in the first half was a lot of the reason for us being flat. We weren't getting shots, we were giving them the ball.

On concern over Josh Smith's production...

If he's not productive we have other guys. One, who you people have been asking a lot about, in Moses, who we can put in there.

Senior guard Markel Starks

On his offensive aggressiveness...
"I think that opportunities presented themselves and I took advantage them."

On his ability to motivate his teammates...
"We needed to win. We went through a couple lapses, and we just can't have that. I try to do both: motivate my teammates as well as perform on the court.

On Moses's contribution...
He was outstanding. His presence on both sides of the court was very important for us to win today, not only defensively, but offensively.

On Aaron's contribution...
He made some very crucial shots. And not just shots, but his effort and energy running down loose balls were also crucial.

DePaul Head Coach Oliver Purnell

Opening Statement...
"Tough Big East battle on opening night on the road. I told the guys throughout the course of the game this is the way it is going to be on the road in the Big East.

"It was a tough battle and we need to do a better job of taking care of the basketball, clearly, and we've got to make free throws in order to give ourselves a better opportunity. I thought we shot ourselves in the foot time and time again at the line and not making the game much closer.

"(When your'e) Down 4, 5, down 3 and had a chance to go to the line and it really tighten things up. I thought they had a trouble guarding us off the drive, and they were fouling us with the new rules the way they are and we were getting to the line but the way the games played now you need to make those free throws in the second half of a tight game because it is really hard for teams to guard you if you execute and drive the basketball. But you got to give Georgetown credit, they hung in there and they did what they had to do on their home court."

On Cleveland Melvin's Performance...
"Cleveland (Melvin) had 12 shots and went to the line 6 times and made 1, I think we incorporated him fine. He got some looks; he got in a little bit of a slump, clearly, but we need for him to have a decent game in a game like this. You go 1 for 6 from the line and 2 for 12 with 3 rebounds in 32 minutes that's not what we expect from Cleveland nor is that what we need to win a game like this. We need Cleve to step up better, we need to take care of the ball we turned it over 18 times, and we shot 50% from the line and we went there a lot."

On Georgetown's 1-2-2 Defense...
"I thought we turned it over a couple times I thought we got fouled on that but you know you got to be stronger with the ball than that. Whoever those guys were in there (Georgetown reserves Aaron Bowen and Moses Ayegba), I thought they picked up the energy, and got their hands on the balls and whether there are bodies or not I thought (Georgetown) turned us over and converted and that really hurt us right there. On the last shot, I thought we had a chance to get to that rebound that we didn't and they made a 3 and I thought that was a big basket. "

"We knew it was coming, certainly disappointed that that happened. But we were certainly ready for the 1-2-2 and the 2-2-1 but the 1-2-2 did give us some problems. I'm disappointed with 18 turnovers but the 1-2-2 doesn't have a lot to do with it.
