WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's basketball team plays its BIG EAST Conference home opener on Tuesday night, Jan. 8 at Verizon Center, hosting Pittsburgh. Tipoff at Verizon Center is slated for 9 p.m.
The game will be shown live on ESPNU, with Adam Amin and Tim Welsh calling all of the action. Fans locally can tune in to ESPN 980 AM for the radio call of Rich Chvotkin.
Georgetown enters the game with a 10-2 overall record and an 0-1 mark in the BIG EAST following a 49-48 loss at Marquette this past Saturday. The loss ended a seven-game win streak for the Hoyas, who are ranked No. 19 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches' poll.
The meeting with Pittsburgh will be the 77th all-time between the schools, with Georgetown leading the head-to-head series, 41-35. The Hoyas have a 23-13 record at home against the Panthers, including a 4-7 mark at Verizon Center. The teams split a pair of games last year, with Georgetown posting a 64-52 win during the BIG EAST Tournament.
The Hoyas are led by sophomore forward Otto Porter Jr. (Morley, Mo./ Scott County Central), who recorded his third double-double of the season, and the sixth of his career, with 16 points and a season-high 13 rebounds in a win over American on Dec. 22. Porter leads the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game and is among the top-15 in the BIG EAST in rebounding (7.5 rpg, fifth), field goal percentage (49.6%, 15th), steals (2.0 spg, tie for seventh), blocked shots (1.37, 13th) and three-point field goal percentage (42.3%, eighth)
Sophomore forward Greg Whittington (Columbia, Md./ Oakland Mills), who scored 13 points and had eight rebounds in the loss to Marquette, is second on the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg). Whittington, who is seventh in the BIG EAST in rebounds, ranks sixth in the BIG EAST in minutes played, leading the Hoyas with 35.85 per game.
Combined, Porter Jr. and Whittington are averaging 24.7 points, 14.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists while shooting 47.5 percent from the floor (115-of-242).
The Georgetown starting lineup - Porter, Whittington, junior guard Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md./Georgetown Prep), Sophomore center Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./ DeMatha) and junior forward Nate Lubick (Southborough, Mass. / St. Mark's) - has accounted for 79.3 percent of the team's scoring this season (619 of 781 points).
Starks, who scored a game-high 18 points and had a career-high seven assists at Marquette, has scored in double figures seven times this season and is third on the team in scoring with 11.7 points per game. He ranks seventh in the BIG EAST in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 43.6 percent of his shots. Hopkins is fourth on the team in scoring with 8.0 points per game and fourth with 2.9 rebounds. Lubick is averaging 6.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, leads the team with 3.1 assists per game and is 14th in the BIG EAST in assist/turnover ratio (3.1 apg, 1.9 tpg).
The Hoyas have been led by a stingy defensive effort this season, holding opponents to under 60 points in nine of its 12 games. GU's opponents are averaging a paltry 54.2 points per game, which ranks second in the BIG EAST and No. 7 nationally. It is the lowest opponent scoring average in Head Coach John Thompson III's tenure at GU. The Hoyas have limited opponents to 37.5 percent shooting from the field, which is third in the conference.
