Hoyas Slay Knights

1/20/2003

Georgetown (10-4, 2-2) got back on track on 1/20/03, defeating Rutgers (8-8, 0-4) by a score of 76-66 at the MCI Center. Mike Sweetney scored his 28th career double-double as he led all scorers with 27 and all rebounders with 13. Mike also had 3 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals. Tony Bethel also had a great game, supplying the Hoyas with sustained, high energy offense,  tying his career high with 20 points.

The Hoyas trailed in the opening minutes of the first frame, but put together a 12-2 run to establish a 7 point edge with 07:33 remaining. Each time the knights reduced this edge to 3 the Hoyas built it back until with 01:40 remaining before intermission the Hoyas led by 11. When the Knights went into overdrive and the Hoyas faltered under a frenetic full court trap, the half adjourned with the visitors only down 5, 33-28.

In the second stanza the Hoyas built their lead back to 11 only to see it whittled away to nothing as the Knights’ relentless traps forced turnovers that led to scoring opportunities. With 10:33 remaining and the visitors up 1, the Hoyas went to work. A 12-3 run later the Hoyas had an 8 point edge. An 8-3 run later the edge was 13 with 02:23 remaining. The final was 76-66.

For the game the Hoyas shot 48.2% (27-56) while holding the Knights to 31.5% (23-73). The Hoyas were outrebounded 45-46 but had 15 assists to Rutgers 7.
