Men's Basketball Falls to Irish in Double OT

2/1/2003

The Hoyas (10-7, 2-5) lost at Notre Dame (18-3, 6-1) on 2/1/03 in double overtime by a score of 92-93.  Michael Sweetney paced all scorers on his way to both a career high in scoring (38 points) and his 30th double-double. Mike pulled down 15 rebounds, had 6 blocks (tying another career mark), 3 assists and 2 steals. Gerald Riley added 15 tallies and Drew Hall contributed 10 points. Hall’s heroics were particularly timely as he ended the first extra period by scoring 5 points in the final 7 seconds.

Georgetown demonstrated early and often that they were better than their record indicates. In the first half, they outshot  the Irish 34.5%(10-29) to 33.3% (12-36) while outrebounding them 26-23, Unfortunately, Notre Dame scored more from the outside, so at intermission the Hoyas trailed by 7, 33-40.

In the second half the Irish continued to hit the long range shot. When Notre Dame’s Matt Carroll hit consecutive threes, the Hoyas found themselves down 15. Undaunted, the Hoyas staged a 26-10 comeback to go on top 66-65 with 3:25 remaining in regulation. Although the Hoyas had time for a final shot with score tied at 69 and 15 seconds remaining, a broken play forced the game into overtime.

In the first extra period Drew Hall hit a pair of free throws and then calmly drilled a trey to take the game into another session. In the second OT, Drew’s long range last second attempt at the win was off and the Hoyas lost a 92-93 heartbreaker.
