Chicago, Ill. - The Georgetown University men's basketball team had little time to revel in its second win over a top-10 team this season, flying to Chicago on Saturday night as the Hoyas ready for another BIG EAST Conference game, this time on Monday, Feb. 3 when they visit DePaul at AllState Arena. Tip-off is slated for 9 p.m. ET.
The game will be shown live on Fox Sports 1, with Eric Collins handling the play-by-play and Stephen Bardo serving as the color analyst. The radio call of Rich Chvotkin can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM.
Georgetown is coming off an impressive 64-60 win over No. 7 Michigan State at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday, ending GU's five-game losing streak.
The win was the second this season for the Hoyas over a top-10 ranked team, as GU posted an 84-80 win over then-No. 9 VCU in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Nov. 24. The Hoyas are now 12-9 overall.
Monday's game with DePaul will be the 29th meeting all-time between the teams. The Hoyas lead the head-to-head series, 22-6, and have won the last 13 meetings overall and the last six on the road. GU posted a 61-54 win at Verizon Center on New Year's Eve in the conference opener for both schools
In Saturday's win over Michigan State, senior guard Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored 16 points, had four assists and two rebounds to lead three players in double figures as a balanced effort led to the 64-60 win. Sophomore guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) scored 12 points and had eight rebounds, while junior forward Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) had 10 points, three rebounds and four blocks and senior forward Nate Lubick (Southborough, Mass./St. Marks) added eight points and six rebounds.
Starks, who has scored in double figures 17 times this season, is second on the team with 16.4 points, which ranks eighth in the BIG EAST, and leads the team with 4.0 assists per game, which ranks tie for sixth in the league. Starks passed the 1,000-point mark for his career in a loss to Villanova on Monday, becoming the 44th player in program history to pass that mark. In the last four games, he is averaging 21.3 points per game.
Sophomore guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) leads the team in scoring with 16.8 points per game, which ranks sixth in the BIG EAST. The sophomore also ranks among the league leaders in assists (14th, 2.9), free throw percentage (3rd, 85.3%), steals (T10th, 1.3), three-point field goal percentage (6th, 40.7%), three-point field goals made (6th, 2.1) and minutes played (5th, 34.8). He is also third on the team with 4.8 rebounds per game and tied a season-high with eight against Michigan State.
GU's backcourt of Smith-Rivera and Starks is averaging 33.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 2.1 steals. They have combined to score 46.8 percent of Georgetown's total points this season (697 of 1,488). Together, they are shooting 42.5 percent from the floor (224-of-527), 36.9 percent from three-point land and (80-of-217) and 84.5 percent from the free throw line (169-of-200).
Junior forward Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha), who recorded his first career double-double, and Georgetown's first of the season, with 11 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in a loss to Seton Hall, is averaging 7.0 points and leads the team with 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. In the last eight games, Hopkins is averaging 7.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game.
Senior forward Nate Lubick (Southborough, Mass./St. Marks) is averaging 5.1 points, 5.7 rebounds per game and is third on the team with 1.9 assists, while senior guard Aaron Bowen (Jacksonville, Fla./QEA [N.C.]) is contributing 5.2 points and 3.8 rebounds, including 6.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in BIG EAST games. Freshman forward Reggie Cameron (Hackensack, N.J./Hudson Catholic) has started the last seven games and is averaging 8.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in that span. Junior forward Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends), who missed five games with a broken jaw, scored eight points in Saturday's win over Michigan State.
The Hoyas rank ninth in the BIG EAST in scoring offense (70.9 points per game) and are third in the league in field goal percentage, connecting on 46.3 percent of their shots. GU ranks fifth in the league in scoring defense, allowing 66.9 points per game, but the Hoyas are second in that category in BIG EAST games, allowing 68.8 points per game. The Blue & Gray rank first in the league in field goal percentage defense (39.6 percent) and second in three-point field goal percentage defense (30.6 percent). Georgetown ranks No. 37 in the country in field goal percentage defense and No. 47 in the country in three-point field goal percentage defense.
DePaul enters Monday's game with a 10-12 overall record and a 2-7 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The Blue Demons have lost four-straight games, including a 77-72 decision at home to Providence on Saturday. DePaul is 7-5 at home, including a 1-3 mark in conference play with losses to Providence, Creighton and Xavier. Senior forward Cleveland Melvin leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Senior guard Brandon Young is second on the team in scoring with 14.4 points per game and leads the team with 3.9 assists, while freshman guard Billy Garrett is third on the team with 11.9 points per game. The Blue Demons are scoring 72.1 points per game and allowing 74.4 points per game. They are shooting 43.2 percent from the floor and 34.8 percent from three-point land, while opponents are shooting 47.0 percent from the floor.
