Georgetown Rallies Late but Falls Short at Xavier, 86-75
Georgetown rallied from a 12-point second half deficit to tie the game with nine minutes left, but could not hang on as No. 22/19 Xavier handed the Hoyas an 86-75 loss at the Cintas Center Sunday afternoon.

In it's last game on Saturday, Georgetown's late comeback was not enough to overcome Creighton. Freshman guard Jahvon Blair (Brampton, Ont./Athlete Institute Prep) poured in a career-high 21 points, bolstered by five 3-pointers and a perfect 4-of-4 performance from the free throw line. Junior forward Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) added 17 points, while adding five rebounds. Freshman guard Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C./Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) registered a team-best six boards to go with nine points.

The Hoyas shot 45.5 percent from the field including an 11-for-26 effort from distance. Georgetown out-rebounded Creighton, 32-26, taking the edge with nine offensive rebounds to the Bluejays' three, recording 11 second chance points in the game.

Trailing by as many as 16 points in the second half, the Hoyas fought back to within one, 71-70, on a Blair trey. Derrickson connected three free throws to make it 80-75 in the waning seconds of regulation, but Creighton made its free throws on the other end to seal the 85-77 victory.

For the season, Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) leads the Hoyas with 16.2 ppg and 10.3 rpg. He currently sits at second in the BIG EAST in defensive rebounds, with 7.7 rpg. Derrickson is second on the team in both categories as he registers 15.6 ppg and 7.3 rpg. In league play, both Govan and Derrickson are among the top five in the conference in rpg.

Xavier is 20-3 overall and 8-2 in the BIG EAST. Most recently, the Musketeers defeated St. John's, 73-68, on Tuesday. Trevon Bluiett led four Musketeers in double figures with 14 points, moving into third place on Xavier's all-time scoring list with 2,014 total career points. He leads Xavier with averages of 18.7 ppg and 5.7 rpg. J.P. Macura (13.0 ppg) and Kerem Kanter (10.2 ppg) round out those in double figures.

This is the 16th meeting between the Hoyas and the Musketeers, with Xavier leading the series, 11-4.

Following Saturday's game, the Hoyas will remain on the road and head to Providence, Rhode Island to face Providence. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6 and can be watched live on FS1 and heard locally on 99.1 WNEW-FM with Rich Chvotkin handling the call.
