Feb. 9, 2010
WASHINGTON - Georgetown University junior guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) was named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after his performance in a pair of games last week. It is the second-straight week that Freeman has been named to the Honor Roll and the seventh-straight week a Georgetown player has been recognized. The Hoyas improved to 17-5 overall on Saturday, Feb. 6 with a thrilling 103-90 win over then-No. 2 Villanova in front of 10,387 fans who braved more than 20 inches of snow that blanked the Nation's Capitol over the weekend. Georgetown is ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the third-straight week and remained at No. 8 in the country in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll. Freeman averaged 23.0 points, 2.0 assists and 1.5 rebounds while connecting on 65.2 percent of his shots from the field (15-of-23) during a 1-1 week for the Hoyas. He scored a game-high 25 points, including his 1,000th-career point (becoming the 41st player in program to reach that plateau) in Georgetown's 103-90 win over Villanova. He hit 8-of-12 from the field and handed out three assists in the win. He scored 21 points in a loss to South Florida earlier in the week. Freeman has scored in double figures in the last 16 games and has at least 20 points in the last four games. Last week, Freeman averaged 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 58.6 percent from the floor and 60.0 percent from three-point land as Georgetown beat Duke and lost to Syracuse. In the last four games, Freeman is averaging 22.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 61.5 percent from the floor (32-of-52) and 63.2 percent from 3-point land (13-of-19). Freeman leads the team with 16.4 points per game and is shooting 54.5 percent from the floor. In conference games, Freeman is averaging 19.9 points per game. Georgetown players have earned 10 honors from the BIG EAST this season. Freeman has been named to the Honor Roll three times (Jan. 11, Feb. 1, Feb. 8), while sophomore center Greg Monroe (New Orleans, La./Helen Cox) was named the league's player of the week on Dec. 14 and has been selected to the Honor Roll three times (Dec. 7, Jan. 18, Jan. 25). Junior guard Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John's College HS) has been named to the Honor Roll twice (Dec. 28 and Jan. 4) and freshman guard Hollis Thompson (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) was named Rookie of the Week on Nov. 30.
Georgetown departed snowy Washington, D.C. yesterday for a game at Providence on Tuesday night, Feb. 9. Tipoff against the Friars is slated for 7 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The game will be shown live on ESPN2 and can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM. |
