Virginia Tech Downs Hoyas 65-80 in BIG EAST Action

2/11/2004

Hoyas lose on Road to Hokies…. Georgetown (13-6, 4-6) lost at Virginia Tech (10-10, 3-6) on Wednesday by a score of 65-80. Gerald Riley paced all scorers with 24 points. Brandon Bowman added 15 point while leading the Hoya’s  rebounding effort with 8 boards. Courtland Freeman contributed 10 tallies and grabbed 6 caroms.

GU trailed by 5 in the opening minutes but by 12:24 had knotted the score at 12 all. The Hokies then went on a 10-2 run, capitalizing on poor Hoya shooting from the field and sub-par rebounding. The deficit grew to 11 before the Hoyas got on track and cut VT’s lead to 5. The Hokies hit 2 free throws and a layup in the final 86 seconds to lead by 9 at intermission.

In the second frame the Hoyas fell behind by 14, cut the gap to 7, saw it balloon back up to 14 and then watched the see-saw battle continue, never quite able to eliminate the gap nor prevent the Hokies from building it back to double digits. Even Georgetown’s normally reliable free throw prowess abandoned them, as they hit only 60% from the sin stripe, a far cry from their 3rd in the BIG EAST average of 72.9%.

For the game Georgetown shot 42.3% but allowed Virginia Tech to hit at a 54.9% clip. Georgetown was outrebounded 26-37  but did have 3 more steals than their opponents.
