Georgetown's Monroe Named to Naismith Trophy Midseason List

Feb. 25, 2010

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University sophomore center Greg Monroe (New Orleans, La./Helen Cox) was one of 30 players named to the Naismith Trophy midseason team, announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

Monroe was one of seven players from the BIG EAST Conference named to the list, the most of any conference. The top 30 midseason men's list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists from around the country.

Last year's BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, Monroe was the only underclassman selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and has been recognized by the conference four times this year, earning Player of the Week honors once and being named to the Honor Roll three times.

Monroe is second on the team in scoring with 15.7 points per game and leads the team in rebounding, grabbing 9.6 boards per game. He ranks 16th in the league in scoring and fourth in rebounds and also ranks among the league leaders in assists (15th,3.65 apg), steals (15th, 1.35 spg) and blocked shots (9th, 1.65 bpg).

The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T is the most prestigious national basketball award and is given annually to the men's college basketball player of the year. This year, the award will be presented at the NCAA Men's Final Four in Indianapolis.

Other notable Naismith Men's College Player of the Year winners include former Georgetown All-American Patrick Ewing, Bill Walton (UCLA), Larry Bird (Indiana State), Michael Jordan (North Carolina), David Robinson (Navy), Kevin Durant (Texas) and last year's winner, Blake Griffin of Oklahoma.

Georgetown, No. 11 in the country in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 13 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll, hosts BIG EAST rival Notre Dame on Saturday, Feb. 27. Tipoff at Verizon Center is slated for noon and the game will be shown live on CBS.
