Georgetown University senior men's basketball player Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md./Georgetown Prep) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. It was the third time this month that Starks has been recognized by the league.
Georgetown plays its penultimate BIG EAST Conference road game of the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 27, visiting league rival Marquette. Tip-off at the Bradley Center is slated for 9 p.m. (IET). The game will be shown live on Fox Sports 1, with Dick Stockton calling the play-by-play and Kevin O'Neill serving as the color analyst. The radio call for Rich Chvotkin can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM.
Starks led the Hoyas to a 74-52 win over Xavier on Saturday at Verizon Center, the team's fifth win in the last seven games. GU improved to 16-11 overall and 7-8 in the BIG EAST Conference.
In two games last week, Starks averaged 17.5 points per game, 2.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 50.0 percent from the floor (11-of-12) and connecting on 11-of-13 free throws (84.6%) as GU lost to Seton Hall on the road and bounced back to beat Xavier.
Starks scored 22 points, had three rebounds and four assists in the win over Xavier, his 23rd game in double figures and his ninth game with at least 20 points this season. He had 13 points in the loss to Seton Hall.
Overall this season, Starks is second on the team in scoring with 16.7 points per game and leads the team with 3.9 assists per game. He ranks seventh in the BIG EAST in scoring, is sixth in the league in assists and seventh in free throw percentage (83.6%). Overall this season, he has played 91.2 percent of the team's minutes (994-of-1090) played.
Starks passed the 1,000-point mark for his career last month, becoming the 44th player in program history to pass that mark. He has now scored 1,127 points in 120 games (a 9.4 per game average) and needs three more points to pass Mike Laughna ('72) and DaJuan Summers ('09), who are currently tied for 32nd on the all-time list.
In the last seven games, he is averaging 17.6 points, 3.4 assists and 2.0 rebounds.
