WASHINGTON - Georgetown University sophomore men's basketball player Otto Porter Jr. (Morley, Mo./ Scott County Central) was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday. It is the third-straight week that Porter Jr. has been named the league's Player of the Week.
This is the first time a player has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week in three-straight weeks since former Boston College standout Troy Bell did so during the 2002-03 season.
Porter Jr. helped Georgetown to pair of wins last week, first with a thrilling 79-78 double overtime win at Connecticut, followed by a 64-51 win over Rutgers on Saturday, extending the team's win streak to 11 games.
Georgetown, 23-4 overall and alone in first place in the BIG EAST with a 13-3 record, moved up to No. 5 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 5 in the USA Today Coaches' poll. This is the highest the Hoyas have been ranked under Head Coach John Thompson III since the team appeared at No. 5 on Jan. 14, 2008.
Porter Jr. averaged 25.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks while shooting 54.2 percent from the floor (13-of-24), 66.7 percent from three point land (4-of-6) and 80.0 percent from the free throw line (20-of-25) in the wins over Connecticut and Rutgers.
In the 79-78 win over UConn last Wednesday, he scored 21 of 22 points in the second half and overtime periods, including five of Georgetown's last eight points as the Hoyas came back from a 78-71 deficit with 1:49 left and he scored the winning basket with nine seconds left. He added five rebounds and four steals in the win.
In the 64-51 win over Rutgers, Porter Jr. scored 28 points, grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, had four steals, blocked three shots and had two assists. He hit six field goals and was 15-of-18 from the free throw line, the most free throws made and attempted by a Georgetown player since 2003.
Overall this season, Porter Jr. is averaging a team-best 16.6 points and 7.6 rebounds, along with 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocked shots. He is second on the team in field goal percentage (51.0%) and leads the team in three-point field goal percentage (46.9%). Porter Jr. ranks eighth in the BIG EAST in scoring, fourth in rebounding, sixth in field goal percentage, first in three-point field goal percentage, 14th in free throw percentage, third in defensive rebounds and 10th in minutes played.
In BIG EAST games only, he is second in the league with 18.7 points per game and sixth with 7.5 rebounds.
During the last three weeks when he has been named the league's player of the week three times, Porter Jr. is averaging 20.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.3 steals, while shooting 51.9 percent from the floor (55-of-106), 50.0 percent from three-point land (18-of-36) and 85.5 percent from the free throw line (53-of-62).
Georgetown plays its final BIG EAST road game of the season on Wednesday, March 6, visiting Villanova for a key BIG EAST Conference matchup in Philadelphia. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. The game will be shown live on ESPN2, with Mike Patrick and LaPhonso Ellis calling all of the action.
