WASHINGTON - Georgetown University junior men’s basketball player Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [NH]) was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team on Sunday as the conference office announced its postseason award winners.
Derrickson was one of three Hoyas to earn all-league honors as he was joined by freshmen Jahvon Blair (Brampton, Ont./Athlete Institute Prep) and Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C./Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) who were both named to the all-freshman team.
In BIG EAST Conference play, Derrickson finished 10th in the league in scoring with 17.2 ppg and tied for second in rebounds, averaging 8.7 per game. Additionally, he ranks second in 3-point field goal percentage (.500) and 12th in free throw percentage (.824). He was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the first time in his career on February 19.
Pickett, who was unanimously named to the all-freshman team, started 27 of 29 games in the regular season. He averaged 9.8 ppg and 3.7 rpg in 27.7 mpg and finished as the third leading scorer on the team. He shot .385 (40-104) from downtown, finishing 15th in the league. His 40 three pointers were the most by any BIG EAST freshmen. He was named Freshman of the Week on February 12. Blair appeared in all 29 games and started two. He averaged 9.3 ppg and 2.2 rpg. He shot .877 (50-of-57) from the free throw line in 18 conference games, finishing fourth among league leaders. He was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on January 8.
Derrickson being named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team gives Georgetown 20 all-time selections to that squad. Blair and Pickett gives the Hoyas 28 players named to the conference’s all-rookie team. Since the BIG EAST was formed in 1979-80, Georgetown players have earned 92 all-conference honors.
Georgetown, seeded No. 8, plays next on Wednesday, March 7 in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament against St. John’s, the No. 9 seed. Tipoff at Madison Square Garden in New York City is slated for 7 p.m. The game will be shown live on FS1.
