BIG EAST Announces Men's Basketball Conference Matchups for 2011-12 Season

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's basketball team will host six conference opponents that appeared in the NCAA Tournament at Verizon Center and will play 12 conference games against teams that advanced to the postseason as the BIG EAST Conference announced league matchups for the 2011-12 season on Thursday afternoon. The 2011-12 season will mark the fifth year the BIG EAST Conference features an 18-game league schedule. Each team will play 12 opponents once and three teams twice. The Hoyas will play home-and-home series against NCAA Tournament participants Marquette (22-15) and St. John's (21-12), as well as long-time rival Providence (15-17). Other home games include appearances by four NCAA Tournament teams, including national champion Connecticut (32-9), Cincinnati (26-9), Notre Dame (27-7) and Villanova (21-12). The Hoyas will also host games against Rutgers and South Florida. Georgetown's nine-game BIG EAST road schedule includes six games against teams that played in the postseason. In addition to away games against Marquette, Providence and St. John's, the Hoyas will visit DePaul (7-24), Louisville (NCAA, 25-10), Pittsburgh (NCAA, 28-6), Seton Hall (13-18), Syracuse (NCAA, 27-8) and West Virginia (NCAA, 21-12). The decisions regarding repeat opponents are based on natural interest, geography, rivalries and television contractual obligations. Georgetown's Record vs. 2011-12 BIG EAST Opponents:
Georgetown finished the 2010-11 season with a 21-11 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in seven years under Head Coach John Thompson III. The Hoyas, who earned a first round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament with a 10-8 regular season record in league play, played against a schedule rated No. 1 in the country and were among the top-20 teams in the RPI Ratings. |
