BIG EAST Announces Men's Basketball Conference Matchups for 2009-10 Season

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown University men's basketball team will host three conference opponents that appeared in the NCAA Tournament at Verizon Center and will play 12 games against teams that advanced to the postseason as the BIG EAST Conference announced league matchups for the 2009-10 season on Thursday afternoon. The 2009-10 season will mark the third year the BIG EAST Conference features an 18-game league schedule. Each team will play 12 opponents once and three teams twice. The Hoyas will play home-and-home series against 2009 NCAA Final Four participant Villanova (30-7) and NCAA Tournament participant Syracuse (28-10), as well as Rutgers. Other home games will include appearances by NCAA Final Four participant Connecticut (31-4), NIT Semifinalist Notre Dame (21-15) and one by St. John's (16-18), which appeared in the College Basketball Invitational. The Hoyas will also host games against Cincinnati, Seton Hall and South Florida. In addition to road games versus Villanova, Syracuse and Rutgers, the Blue & Gray will visit five other teams that played in the postseason last year - Louisville (NCAA, 31-6), Marquette (NCAA, 25-10), Pittsburgh (NCAA, 31-5), West Virginia (NCAA, 23-12) and Providence (NIT, 19-14) - as well as a visit to DePaul The decisions regarding repeat opponents are based on natural interest, geography, rivalries and television contractual obligations. Georgetown advanced to the postseason for the fifth-straight year under John Thompson III. The Hoyas ranked among the top-10 teams in the country in strength of schedule and posted wins during the 2008-09 season over two teams that advanced to the Final Four.
