Coach Thompson Names 3rd Assistant Coach

8/5/2004

Georgetown University Men’s Basketball Head Coach John Thompson announced today that he has added Sydney Johnson (Princeton ’97) to his staff as an assistant coach.

“Sydney understands the nuances of basketball,” said Head Coach John Thompson. “He is a guy that thoroughly dominated games while only averaging nine points per game. He is the consummate team player whose experience as both a collegian and a professional will be invaluable.”

Sydney holds the double distinction of being the only three-time captain in the history of Princeton basketball and its All-Time steals leader. An All Ivy League 1st team selection his junior and senior seasons, he was named the Ivy League's Player of the Year in 1997. A member of Princeton’s 1,000 point club, Johnson averaged 9.8 points per game.

Since graduation, Sydney has spent the past seven years playing professionally in Italy and Spain. In 1998 he started for Gorizia Pallacanestro, the team that won the Italian Second Division championship. In 1999 he won a division championship with Reggio Calabria and last season won the Italian World Championship with Sienna.

Originally from Towson, Maryland, Johnson attended Towson Catholic High School and, post graduate, Fork Union.
