The Hoyas opened the 2001-2002 season on 11/16/01, defeating Marymount at home by a score of 108-47. Mike Sweetney scored his seventh double-double as a Hoya leading both teams in scoring with 27 and both team in rebounding with 14 (11 offensive), while blocking 4 shots. Wesley Wilson also had a double-double (his second) with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Freshmen Drew Hall  and Tony Bethel combined for 33 tallies on 12 of 19 shooting, 13 assists and 6 steals as Hall contributed 17 points, 6 assists and 3 steals to Bethel’s 14 points 7 assists and 3 steals.  Kevin Braswell added 11 tallies, 2 assists and lead both teams with 6 steals. Courtland Freeman added 10 points and 6 rebounds in 13 minutes of playing time and Victor Samnick had 10 rebounds and 8 points.

 The Saints came out with an aggressive game plan but quickly found themselves overmatched by the Hoyas. A four point differential at the 15:34 mark (14-10) was the closest Marymount would come to the upset. A 34-7 run gave Georgetown a 31 point lead (48-17 04:42) which would become a 37 point edge (58-21) at intermission.

 Although the Hoyas shooting percentage cooled in the second stanza (42.9% from 51.3%) as the defense refused to give up uncontested shots. Marymount only hit 1 of their 12 3-point attempts and continued to turn the ball over as the game moved out of reach. For the game the Hoyas outrebounded Marymount 55-35, forced 28 turnovers while giving up 9, made 18 steals while allowing 5 and had 26 assists to Marymount’s 12.
