Hoyas Down Dukes 80-60

11/25/2002  The Hoyas won their second contest of the 2002-2003 season on 11/25/02, beating the Dukes of James Madison University, 80-60. Gerald Riley scored a career high 23 points to pace all scorers. He also dished out a career best 6 assists, and accomplished all this in 24 minutes of playing time.

 All American Candidate Mike Sweetney scored 21 points in only 20 minutes of playing time and paced all rebounders with 9 caroms. Mike also tied a career high in steals with 3. Mike joined the Georgetown 1,000 point club before the game was 8 minutes old. His current total of 1,016 career points make him 33rd on the scoring leader list, but 15 more points would secure the 28th position in the hierarchy. Mike is currently 22nd  on the rebound leader list with 556 behind Jameel Watkins’ 557.

 Georgetown jumped out to an early lead, going ahead by as many as 18 in the first stanza. At intermission the score was 45-28. The Hoyas had a 25-10 rebounding edge and were shooting from the field at a 54.3% clip.

 In the second half the Dukes played a much more competitive game. Although Georgetown’s shooting percentage dipped in the face of James Madison’s pressure, the Hoyas still ended up outscoring their rivals 35-32. For the game the Hoyas won the battle of the boards 49-32.
