Hoyas Defeat Wildcats

11/28/2001

Box Score

The Hoyas beat one of their own on Wednesday 11/28/01, when they defeated Horace Broadnax’s Bethune Cookman Wildcats by a score of 91-61. Horace, an alum of the Business school (’86) was a member of the 1984 National Championship squad and, like Coach Esherick is also a member of the Bar. Horace used his familiarity with Georgetown’s system to prepare his team, but ultimately found his “case” weaker than the “argument” put forth by opposing council Esherick.

Wesley Wilson paced all scorers with 21 points and all rebounders with 10 boards in his third double-double as a Hoya.  Gerald Riley scored a career high 19 points and pulled down 8 caroms. Kevin Braswell scoured 20 points and dished out 6 assists.

The Hoyas came out with great intensity, knowing that the Wildcats were looking to pounce, and ran up a 15 point edge in the first seven minutes. When Bethune Cookman cut into the bulge, the Hoyas replied with another run, pushing the lead up to 21.  At Halftime Georgetown led by 25, 49-24.

In the second stanza the Hoyas continued to outscore the Wildcats as the contest became more physical.  Georgetown led by as many as 38, despite shooting only half as well (11-31 35.5%) as they did in the first half. For the game GU shot 51.7% while holding BCC to 34.5% from the field. Georgetown won the battle of the boards 44-30.
