Georgetown's Monroe Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University sophomore center Greg Monroe (New Orleans, La./Helen Cox) was named the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Hoyas to a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents last week. Monroe was also named the national Player of the Week by ESPN.com. Georgetown improved to 8-0 on with a 74-66 win over No. 17 Washington on Saturday at the Wooden Classic in Anaheim, Calif. It was the second win over a ranked opponent for the Hoyas, who beat then-No. 22 Butler, 72-65, at the Jimmy V Classic in New York City on Tuesday. The Hoyas, who are 8-0 for the first time under sixth-year Head Coach John Thompson III, are ranked No. 11 in both the Associated Press Top 25 poll and the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll. Monroe led the Hoyas to their wins last week, averaging 19.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. Against Butler at the Jimmy V Classic, Monroe set career-highs with 24 points and 15 rebounds in leading the Hoyas to the win at Madison Square Garden. He followed that up with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win over Washington on Saturday. For the season, Monroe leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Monroe is tied for the team lead in assists with 3.0 per game and is second on the team with 1.4 blocks per game. He ranks 19th in the BIG EAST in scoring and third in the BIG EAST in rebounding. Georgetown returns home this week, hosting Old Dominion at McDonough Arena on Saturday, Dec. 19. Tipoff at McDonough Arena is slated for 7 p.m. The game will be shown live on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network, with Dave Feldman and Mark Tillmon calling all of the action, and can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM, with Rich Chvotkin handling the play-by-play.
