WASHINGTON (AP) (Dec. 18, 1999) -- Kevin Braswell scored 18 points to lead Georgetown to an 83-75 win against Houston Saturday afternoon.
The Hoyas (6-3), who won their fourth game in a row, held the Cougars (5-5) scoreless the final three minutes, 46 seconds of the game to secure the victory.
Gee Gervin led Houston with 24 points, but fouled out of the game with 14 seconds remaining. Gervin, the Cougars leading scorer, sat on the bench for six minutes during the second half after picking up his fourth personal foul at the 11:37 mark.
After turning the ball over 12 times in the first half, Georgetown trailed 46-43 at halftime. Houston scored 20 points off of the Hoyas' 23 turnovers.
The lead changed hands several times during the second half. Kenny Younger made a 3-point basket with 3:46 remaining to tie the score at 75. That was the last points the Cougars scored in the game.
Braswell answered Younger's basket with a 3-pointer then Rhese Gibson made an 18-foot jumper to put Georgetown ahead 80-75.
During the game, Georgetown fans chanted "1984." That year, the Hoyas defeated Houston in the NCAA championship game, 84-75. Ironically, had Georgetown's Anthony Perry made the second of his two free throws with three seconds to play, the score would have been identical to that game.
