The No. 9-ranked Georgetown University men's basketball team departs today for South Bend, Ind., where the Hoyas will face No. 15-ranked Notre Dame on Wednesday, Dec. 29 in the BIG EAST Conference opener for both schools. Tipoff at the Joyce Convocation Center is slated for 7 p.m. (ET).
The game will be shown live on ESPN2, with Jon Sciambi and Fran Fraschilla calling all of the action. Fans can listen to Rich Chvotkin's radio broadcast locally on ESPN 980 AM.
The Hoyas improved to 11-1 overall last Thursday with an 86-69 win at then-No. 16 Memphis. Georgetown, winners of three-straight games, is now ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 9 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll. The Hoyas are ranked No. 2 in the latest RPI Ratings from WarrenNolan.com and are No. 2 according to Strength of Schedule.
This will be the 27th meeting all-time between Georgetown and Notre Dame. The Hoyas lead the head-to-head series, 14-12, and have won five of the last seven meetings between the schools. Notre Dame, winners of the last two games, posted a 78-64 win over GU in Washington last season. Georgetown is 4-7 in games played at Notre Dame. Its last win on the road in the series was an 85-82 double overtime victory during the 2005-06 season.
Senior guard Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha), who scored a game-high 24 points in the win over Memphis, was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. He connected on 9-of-12 shots from the field to score a game-high 24 points with five rebounds and four assists. It was the second appearance on the Weekly Honor Roll for Freeman, who was named the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year.
Freeman leads the team in scoring and is third in the BIG EAST, averaging 18.9 points per game. He is fifth in the league in field goal percentage (56.8 percent), fifth in free throw percentage (86.5 percent) and second in three-point field goal percentage (49.2 percent). Freeman is also averaging 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
Senior guard Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) is tied for second on the team in scoring with 13.7 points per game and ranks second in the BIG EAST, and No. 14 nationally, with 6.3 assists per game.
Junior guard Jason Clark (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) is tied with Wright in scoring with 13.7 points and ranks tied for seventh in the BIG EAST in three-point field goal percentage at 44.8 percent and eighth in three-point field goals made (2.17 per game). Senior forward Julian Vaughn (Reston, Va./Oak Hill Academy) is fourth on the team in scoring with 9.5 points per game, leads the team, and is 12th in the BIG EAST, with 7.0 rebounds per game and is sixth in the BIG EAST with 2.09 blocks per game.
The Hoyas rank No. 18 in the country, and fifth in the BIG EAST, in scoring offense, averaging 81.0 points per game. In the last seven games, Georgetown is averaging 86.4 points per game and shooting 53.8 percent from the floor.
Georgetown is ranked No. 2 in the country in field goal percentage, connecting on 52.8 percent of its field goals. The Hoyas are also No. 1in the country in adjusted field goal percentage (giving credit for three-point field goals) at 60.4 percent. GU leads the BIG EAST and ranks No. 4 in the country in three-point field goal percentage at 42.6 percent.
The Hoyas are also No. 8 in the country in assists per game, handing out 18.4. Nine different Georgetown players have at least 10 assists this season.
