Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's basketball team returned to Washington on Thursday following the team's 76-64 win over Texas-El Paso in the Sun Bowl Tournament Championship game. The Hoyas, who have won five-straight games, improved to 8-2 as senior guard Darrel Owens was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

  • Georgetown improved to 8-2 with a pair of wins at the Sun Bowl Tournament. The Hoyas have now won five-straight games as they wrapped up their preseason schedule. BIG EAST Conference play begins on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, when the Hoyas host Providence at the MCI Center. Tipoff at the MCI Center is slated for 7 p.m. and the game can be heard live on SportsTalk 980 AM.
  • Georgetown beat Colgate, 61-45, in the first round of the Sun Bowl, and then toppled host UTEP, 76-64, in the championship game.
  • The Hoyas are now 75-44 all-time during in-season tournaments.
  • Senior guard Darrel Owens (Napoleonville, La./Assumption) was named the Sun Bowl Tournament's Most Valuable Player after scoring a tournament-high 21 points - connecting on all but one of his shots (6-of-6 from the field, 5-of-5 from three-point land and 4-of-5 from the free throw line) - to lead the Hoyas in the championship game.
  • Owens averaged 13.5 points, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals in the two games.
  • He was joined on the all-tournament team by senior forward Brandon Bowman (Santa Monica, Calif.), who averaged 12.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals in the two games.
  • Georgetown scored 76 points in the championship game, two shy of their season-high, set on Dec. 21 in a 78-49 win over Savannah State.
  • The Hoyas connected on a season-high 57.8 (26-of-45) percent of their field goals in the championship game.
  • It was the team's best performance from the field since connecting on 59.6 percent of their field goals (28-of-47) in a 79-56 win over Howard on December 30, 2004, a span of 30 games.
  • GU tied a season-high with 12 three-pointers made in the game against UTEP; they hit 12 on Dec. 11 in a 76-51 win over Fairfield; the team shot 60.0 percent from long distance, the best performance by a Georgetown team since connecting on 72.7 (8-of-11) against Howard on Dec. 2, 2000.
  • Georgetown handed out 38 assists in the two games at the Sun Bowl Tournament and has handed out at least that many in each of the last four games, averaging 19.3 during that span.
  • Bowman handed out six helpers in the win over UTEP, tying his career high.
  • In the opening game against Colgate, sophomore center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored a team-high 18 points, hitting 8-of-8 shots from the field and both of his free throw attempts.
  • The Hoyas got key contributions from the bench during the wins as well. Aided by Owens' 21-point performance against UTEP, the bench averaged 18.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals during the tournament.
  • In the opening win, sophomore guard Tyler Crawford (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) connected on both of his field goal attempts during a key first half run and scored five points, while Owens chipped in six points and four assists.
  • In the championship game, with Hibbert and sophomore Jeff Green (Adelphi, Md./Northwestern) in early foul trouble, senior Amadou Kilkenny-Diaw (Washington, D.C./St. Alban's) scored four points, handed out two assists and grabbed one rebound.
  • Sophomore guard Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman) continued his steady play during the weekend; he averaged 11.0 points, 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds while connecting on 7-of-13 shots from the field, including 6-of-8 from outside the arc.
