WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University Varsity Heavyweight Crew completed competition at the 26th annual George Washington Invitational, winning all of their races on Saturday. The Hoyas' first victories came in the morning session against the University of Virginia.
The Georgetown men's varsity eight comprised of coxswain Kerri McKie, stroke Matthew Stewart, Michael Blommer, Benjamin Holtzmuller, Henry Hoffstot, Graham Miller, Timothy Broughton, Jack O'Donnell and Jameson Nelson defeated Virginia in close racing. The Hoyas were able to edge the Cavaliers by a few seats in a time of 5:37.1.
The second varsity eight of coxswain Nathaniel Liu, stroke Austin Bury, John Absher, William Halle, Kyle Textor, Michael Hennessy, Lazar Zdravkovic, Matthew Mullman and Gar Ditz were also victorious over UVA, finishing in a time of 5:43.9, just half a second in front of the Cavaliers.
In afternoon racing, Georgetown faced the Florida Institute of Technology. The Hoyas varsity eight won their race by one length in a time of 5:41.3, 3.1 seconds ahead of FIT. The Georgetown second varsity also finished in front, winning by 2.3 seconds in a time of 5:56.4.
"I felt that the Georgetown varsity boats did a good job keeping their composure on Saturday and improved their rowing throughout the weekend", stated Head Coach Tony Johnson. "We'll look to continue to make strides as we continue our regular season".
Georgetown also raced on Friday, with both varsity boats falling to Navy. The Georgetown varsity will be back in action this Saturday at 2:00PM when they face Holy Cross on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, New Jersey.
