WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's lightweight men's rowing team closed out the 2017 racing season at the IRA National Championship Regatta on Sunday. The Hoyas wrapped up competition in the Petite Finals of the 8+, 4+ and 4- events.
Less than eight seconds separated all four boats in the opening heat of the 8+ race as the Hoyas finished fourth against Cornell, Columbia and Princeton to move on to the Petite Final. Racing head-to-head against local-rival Navy, Georgetown was edged by just under two seconds to place second in the Petite Final.
Looking to defend their 2016 National Championship in the 4+ race, the Hoyas couldn't repeat their sweeping victory from a year ago. Georgetown placed sixth overall in their heat on Friday that featured Navy, Dartmouth, Penn, Yale and MIT while placing fifth in the Petite Final against Yale, Colgate, Cornell and MIT on Sunday.
Georgetown raced in the lightweight four without coxswain event for the first time this season. The Hoyas finished fourth in the opening heat against Princeton, Cornell, Dartmouth and MIT on Friday, just shy of 2.3 seconds from qualifying for the Grand Final. In Sunday's Petite Final, the Blue & Gray placed third behind Columbia and Yale while beating MIT by more than 10 seconds.
