WASHINGTON - Georgetown University’s men’s rowing team took part in the 52nd Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River in Boston, Mass., on Sunday. The Hoyas lightweight four boat finished fourth overall while the heavyweight eight squad placed 25th.
Posting a time of 18:20.019, the lightweight four boat earned a bronze medal after finishing fourth overall and third among collegiate teams. Columbia edged the Hoyas by less than two seconds and Yale was the only other collegiate team to beat the Blue & Gray. The New York AC won the 16-boat head-race with a time of 17:59.738.
“Our lightweight boat did a great job with their fourth-place finish,” Head Coach Luke Agnini said. “What’s also impressive is that there were three freshmen in the boat, including the coxwain, which will only help their confidence down the line.”
Battling tough conditions and a strong 20 miles-per-hour headwind, the heavyweight boat finished in 25th place in the Championship Eight event. A midrace collision derailed Georgetown’s momentum after keeping pace with its Eastern Sprints rivals the majority of the opening half of the race.
“Despite the end result, I was extremely happy about the way we started the race,” Agnini said. “Our time before the crash was pretty close to most of our competition from the Eastern Springs league. We just need to do a better job of battling back from adversity when something unexpected comes along.”
Georgetown closes out its fall schedule with a pair of regattas this weekend. The Hoyas travel up to Philadelphia, Pa., on Saturday to take part in the Head of the Schuylkill and to Princeton, N.J., for the Princeton Chase on Sunday.
