Georgetown Men's Crew Announces Ken Dreyfuss as Freshman Lightweight Coach
Sept. 2, 2010
WASHINGTON - Georgetown University has announced the addition of Ken Dreyfuss to its men's crew coaching roster. Dreyfuss will serve as the freshman lightweight coach, bringing decades of elite experience to Georgetown and will lead the recruiting effort for the lightweight men. Ken has had a distinguished career as a rowing competitor and coach at the collegiate, national and international levels. As an athlete, he captained and coxed Penn's Heavyweight crew that broke Harvard's six year undefeated streak in 1969 and took three consecutive team championships at the Intercollegiate National Championships (IRAs). Ken was a coxswain at the 1974-75 World Rowing Championships, the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and the 1975 Pan-American Games where his boat won a gold medal. "I am thrilled we've attracted such a fine coach to Georgetown, but not surprised. Ken's competitive record speaks for itself and his reputation as an affable, skillful teacher make this a great fit for our team," said Varsity Lightweight Coach Evans Liolin. "In recent years, we've been fortunate to have some tremendous people mentor our freshmen and I am confident Ken will help us build from that foundation toward the highest level. Our frosh are certainly a lucky bunch." Ken's coaching career has included Chestnut Hill Academy, the US Naval Academy's Plebe Heavyweights, Stanford University's Varsity Heavyweight Men and Potomac Boat Club. Ken's Chestnut Hill teams won the Philadelphia City and Stotesbury Championships. At Navy, his Plebe crew garnered the 1982 Eastern Sprints title while the entire Navy team won overall supremacy honors at the IRA in 1982, '83 and '84. At Stanford, Ken was named 1986 PAC 10 Coach of the Year while his Varsity men defeated the University of California six times and the University of Washington three times, ending a seventeen year drought against both. In 1993, Ken founded Potomac Boat Club's Elite Sculling Program, which in the past decade has placed more athletes on the United States National Rowing Team than any other U.S. program.
A native Washingtonian and Georgetown resident, Ken will join Tony Johnson, Evans Liolin and the outstanding coaching staff at Georgetown with two distinct goals in mind: "to help Coach Liolin and the 150s bring home the Jope Cup for lightweight team supremacy at the Sprints and a gold medal at the IRA." |
