WASHINGTON - Senior linebacker Robert McCabe (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern Prep) will have an opportunity to prove his potential to play football at the next level when he participates in The 88th Annual East-West Shrine Game on Saturday, January 19. The showcase of collegiate football talent will be held at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. with kick-off scheduled for 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the NFL Network.

McCabe will suit up for the East squad the longest-running showcase of elite collegiate football talent. The All-American and the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year will have the opportunity to measure his abilities against some of the best draft-eligible student-athletes in the nation to better of chance of making an NFL roster. He arrived in Florida on Sunday and will participate in a week of practices under former NFL Head Coach Jerry Glanville in front of NFL coaches, executives and scouts. He will also be visiting the Shriners Hospitals for Children, the beneficiary of the game, with the rest of the game participants and coaches.

"This is a great opportunity for myself to go down to Florida and compete with some of the best college football players in the country as well as a chance for me to impact the lives of the children at the Shriners Hospital," McCabe said. "I have a week of practice and then the game to show that I can compete and succeed against this level of talent, and I can't wait for the opportunity!"

McCabe capped off a brilliant career on the Hilltop as one of the most decorated football players in Georgetown history. He compiled 407 tackles during his four-year career, the most in program history. His 159 total tackles during the 2012 season, broke his own single-season tackles record set during his junior season. He also led the PL with 14.5 tackles for loss along with 5.5 sacks. His senior season earned him Patriot League and ECAC Defensive Player of the Year, while he was named All-America First Team by the Associated Press, the American Football Coaches Association and The Sports Network. McCabe finished fourth for the Buck Buchanan Award, given annually to the FCS's most outstanding defensive player.

 

 

After being selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game before winter break, McCabe cut his vacation short in preparation for the week of practices leading up to Saturday's game.

"I came back down to school early, before New Years to start my training at the Sport and Speed Institute with Coach Justin Kavanaugh over in Virginia," McCabe said. "We've been working hard over there preparing for this game and the combine and pro day events that will come after. Playing in the NFL has always been a dream of mine and I am going to do everything I can to make it."
