The Georgetown University football team has placed a league-high 32 student-athletes on the Patriot League Football Academic Honor Roll, in an announcement from the league’s Executive Director Carolyn Schile Femovich on Thursday.
Seniors Ataefiok Etukeren (Phoenix, Ariz./The Lawrenceville School [N.J.] and Brent Tomlinson (Hoffman Estates, Ill./St. Viator), who were named to the 2008 ESPN the magazine Academic All-District 2 First Team, head up the list of Hoyas named to the honor roll.
Etukeren, a defensive end, carries a 3.33 cumulative grade-point average in operations management, with minors in marketing and theology. Tomlinson, a wide receiver, currently maintains a 3.86 grade-point average in finance. The senior, also was one of the founding members of Hoyas for Christ, an ecumenical Christian group of student-athletes from almost every athletic team at Georgetown.
Eight seniors, including Tom Amaro (Shreveport, La./Loyola College Prep), Dean Duchak (Mahwah, N.J./St. Joseph’s), Justin Moore (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit), Brain Newman (New York, N.Y./Stuyvesant), Torre Soderlund (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal), Travis Zorrilla (Lynn, Mass./St. John’s Prep), Etukeren and Tomlinson made the team. The Hoyas also placed eight juniors, seven sophomores and nine freshmen on the honor roll.
As a team, Georgetown finished the Fall 2008 semester with a combined 3.012 grade-point average.
To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the Patriot League’s seven fall championship sports. A record 131 student-athletes were named to the 2008 football honor roll.
