EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Senior defensive end Andrew Schaetzke (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) was honored as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Defensive Player of the of the Year at the annual Eastern College Football Awards Banquet presented by FieldTurf on Thursday, February 16 in the Chase Club at MetLife Stadium. Schaetzke, a consensus All-American selection, has also been named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and selected to the PL Academic Honor Roll for the 2011 season.

"Andrew has been the best defensive player in the league, the best player on the East Coast and I think he's one of the best players in the country," Head Coach Kevin Kelly said. "It's a special award for him and I couldn't be happier. It's terrific to see where Andrew has come from and what he has become. He's done very well in the classroom and he's going to have a shot to play at the next level and if not he'll end up Wall Street someday and that's what Georgetown football is all about."

Schaetzke capped off a stellar career, with a historic senior season, leading the league in tackles for loss (22.5) and sacks (13), finishing sixth and eighth in the nation in those categories, respectively. He also had 69 tackles, one interception, five pass breakups, three quarterback hurries and three fumbles forced during the season.

Schaetzke and the Georgetown defense helped turnaround the Hoyas football program, pushing the squad to an 8-3 season, while playing Lehigh for the Patriot League Championship on November 12. Individually, his 2011 season helped him climb the record books at Georgetown and also in the Patriot League. Schaetzke moved to second in GU history in career sacks (30.5) and third in Patriot League history.

Football programs from all levels, including FBS, FCS, Division II and Division III were recognized during the event on Thursday evening.
