Michael Neuberger returns to the Hoyas as the offensive coordinator
March 31, 2014
WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Head Football Coach Rob Sgarlata has named Michael Neuberger offensive coordinator. Neuberger, who coached running backs and tight ends at Cornell last season, returns to the Hilltop, where he coached wide receivers in 2012.
"The Hoya Football Family is very excited to welcome Michael Neuberger back the Hilltop," Georgetown Head Football Coach Rob Sgarlata said. "Michael is an excellent teacher who relates well to our student-athletes. He brings a positive and enthusiastic energy to the office every day and I am sure that will translate to success for our offense."
Neuberger will take the reins on offense, while working with the Hoyas' running backs and tight ends.
Last season at Cornell, Neuberger worked with running backs and tight ends, helping Luke Hagy earn All-Ivy League Honorable Mention recognition, while Ty Bostain led Ivy League tight ends in receptions (29) and finished third at his position in receiving yardage (262).
In 2012 with the Hoyas, Neuberger's wide receivers averaged 12.11 yards per catch and accounted for seven touchdowns, while helping develop Kevin Macari into a Second Team All-Patriot League selection.
At Columbia, Neuberger served as the tight ends coach in 2011, where he assisted in the offensive game plan development, while also serving as the scout team coordinator for defense and special teams. During his season at Columbia, Neuberger developed sophomore tight end Hamilton Garner into an All-Ivy League honorable mention selection.
Prior to his season with the Lions, Neuberger spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Maryland. Neuberger worked with running backs in 2009 and with the offensive line in 2010, where he was an integral part of the second-largest turnaround in the FBS, helping the Terrapins improve by seven wins from its previous season. Neuberger worked with the 2010 Maryland offensive line that helped produce 32.23 points per game, the 30th-best mark in the nation. He also worked with the fourth best punt return unit in the nation that averaged 16.94 yards per return, featuring First Team All-ACC selection Tony Logan.
Neuberger spent two seasons, from 2007-09 as an assistant football coach at University of Dayton, where he worked with tight ends, slot receivers and offensive lineman. At Dayton, Neuberger helped in the team's development and implementation of the spread offense, while coaching AP Second Team All-America tight end Matt Champa. His work helped the Flyers rank fifth in the nation in passing (299.50 yards per game) and sixth in the nation in scoring (38.83 points per game).
He earned his start in coaching at Dayton where he started as a student assistant coach and strength and conditioning assistant directly following his playing days in June 2004. In his first season he worked primarily with defensive backs, before shifting his focus to tight ends and offensive linemen as a football graduate assistant from 2005-07.
Neuberger, a Pittsburgh, Pa. native, played four seasons from 2001-2004 in the secondary and on special teams at Dayton. He was a member of two Pioneer Football League championship teams, while helping the Flyers win its first I-AA Mid-Major national championship in 2002. He was a two-time member of the PFL Academic Honor Roll.
He graduated from Dayton with a bachelor of science in education and allied professions in 2005.
