Robert McCabe signed a free-agent deal with the Miami Dolphins on Saturday.
April 29, 2013
WASHINGTON - Georgetown University senior linebacker Robert McCabe (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern Prep) has signed as a priority free agent with the Miami Dolphins, following the 2013 NFL Draft. McCabe a 2012 All-American selection and the leading tackler in Georgetown football history, is aiming to become just the second Hoya in the modern era to play in the NFL, joining Alex Buzbee.
McCabe, who received Georgetown's Al Blozis Award for the football team's most valuable player at last weekend's year-end banquet, will now shift his focus to the Dolphins mini-camp set to begin this coming weekend and earning a spot on the team's 53-man roster.
"It hasn't really hit me yet," McCabe said on Saturday night. "I've been working for this for my entire life and I'm just excited to be a Miami Dolphin and get down to there this week and get to work."
"I'm thrilled for Rob," Head Coach Kevin Kelly said. "I think he'll be an excellent pro football player. He's got the drive and determination, he's a very intelligent football player and what I've told numerous pro scouts is he can play multiple linebacker spots and will excel on special teams."
McCabe was a dominant force in the Patriot League during his final two seasons on the Hilltop, posting consecutive 100-tackle seasons, including a Division I FCS-leading 159 tackles in 2012. McCabe, the 2012 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, had 14.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. His strong senior season earned him an invitation to the 88th Annual East-West Shrine Game, where he was able to compete with some of this year's top draft-eligible talent in front of scores of NFL executives, coaches and scouts, where he impressed.
"The (Miami Dolphins) had been in contact me throughout the draft," said McCabe, who had been contacted by several teams throughout the process. "Then they called me right after the draft to sign me and I think this provides me with my best opportunity."
McCabe, who is scheduled to graduate from the McDonough School of Business in May, was surrounded by family and friends in Georgetown on Saturday when he spoke with the Dolphins about joining the team and being ready for mini-camp in a week.
"(My family) has been down in D.C. the whole weekend," McCabe said. "They're all excited , it's been awesome having them down here this weekend."
