WASHINGTON - Georgetown football's rising-senior middle linebacker Robert McCabe (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern Prep) was selected to the 2012 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS Linebacker Award Watch List on Monday morning.
McCabe was named a team co-captain in April, after setting Georgetown University's single-season tackles record (134) during the 2011 campaign. The total also led the Patriot League (PL), helping him earn first team all-league honors following his record-breaking season. McCabe was named the PL Defensive Player of the Week after a 15 tackle, 50-yard interception return for a touchdown performance in GU's 40-17 win over Colgate on October 22. He also earned a weekly honorable mention for a 14-tackle, two pass breakup game against Wagner on October 9.
In addition to his 134 tackles, McCabe showed a knack for forcing turnovers, intercepting four passes, with 104 return yards and a touchdown. He also forced two fumbles and recovered one, for a defense that was fourth in the nation in turnovers gained with 33.
McCabe is part of a linebacker corps that returns all four-starters from the 2011 season and defense that returns seven starters. The Hoyas defense led the Patriot League during the 2011 season in scoring defense, allowing just 19.3 points per game.
The Hoyas open the 2012 season at Davidson on Saturday, September 1. GU will play six home games at Multi-Sport Field in 2012, after finishing with an undefeated 4-0 home record in 2011.
