WASHINGTON, D.C. - Members of the Georgetown University football team are back on campus preparing for the start of the 2009 football season. This is the first in a series of updates that members of the Hoyas will provide during the course of the next two months.
Senior offensive lineman and two-time captain Dan Matheny (Fairfax, Va./St. Paul VI), a three-year starter at center, provides the first update:
"As we wrap up June and get into July here at Georgetown, we welcome more faces to the daily workouts. We now have about 30 to 35 players that have made the effort to move here for the summer and give their time and effort to make the team better. We are extremely excited about the group we have.
"Within this group we welcome eight freshmen to the Hilltop for the first time. They have gotten only a little taste of what it means to train like a Hoya and are taking it in stride and working hard to establish themselves. Along with the freshman, the returners have been doing a great job getting in shape and ready for camp. This is a different team this year and you can feel the energy for the upcoming season in every workout.
"In addition to the workouts, everyone who is here for the summer is balancing internships, jobs and classes. We have multiple guys who are working on the Hill for their Congressmen. In addition, we have guys doing research on campus, working for marketing firms and getting a taste of law enforcement. Others hold work-study jobs or are taking classes to get ready for the upcoming school year.
"I cannot emphasize how excited we are for the upcoming year. We have a fantastic group of guys who work extremely hard and have a chip on their shoulder going into this season. The leadership and commitment of our team has never been better. We have a lot of strides to make to get this program to the next level but with this group, we believe we can take this team to new heights.
"We absolutely cannot wait for the first opportunity to show everyone what we have been working toward September 5 and are looking forward to a great season.
"As July rolls along, players will be keeping everyone updated on how things are going. We thank everyone out there for all of the support for our program and look forward to seeing everyone back together at games this season. Go Hoyas! Beat Holy Cross!"
