From The Desk of Kevin Kelly
Dear family, friends and fans,
I hope everyone has had a great summer! Here in the football offices, summer has officially come to an end. On Saturday, we welcomed 220 prospects from 25 different states, for our first camp on our brand new turf at Multi-Sport Field. The group was made up of over 90-percent rising seniors and was a great success. I want to thank all of the coaches and staff that worked the camp. Also, a special thank you to everyone who helped make the new field surface a reality.
The full coaching staff was back in the office early on Monday morning to begin final preparations for our team's arrival on campus on Sunday, August 4. This is an exciting time of year for coaches and what makes it more exciting is the excellent senior leadership from our four captains, Sean Campbell, Isaiah Kempf, Daniel Sprotte and Dustin Wharton, as well as the rest of our 24 person senior class. They have been setting the tone since our winter training program.
Following a great spring, everyone has continued working very hard throughout the summer. Some have spent the summer right here on campus, including several incoming freshmen, who have been a part of the Community Scholars Program, while many others are scattered across the country with internships. Regardless of where the guys spent their summer, the reports have been positive and we are all looking forward to hitting the ground running for our first practice at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 5.
Next week, Dustin Wharton, our Sports Information Director Ryan Sakamoto and I will travel to Bethlehem, Pa. for Patriot League Media Day. It's an opportunity to meet with the other coaches and student-athletes from around the league, talk about the upcoming season with media and receive any preseason awards. Last year, Robert McCabe was our first Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and followed it up with a historic season. We're hoping the trend continues.
I wish to also express my gratitude for all of the support we received this year from Bruce Simmons and the Gridiron Club. The Gridiron Club is composed of all football donors to The Annual Fund for Georgetown Athletics. Not only did they contribute over $300,000 in support of our program, but they set a record with over 430 football donors this past year. Annual fund support is crucial to providing the best day-to-day experience for our young men. The contributions directly support our travel and recruiting budgets, which are two of our largest expenses, enabling us to recruit the best talent and travel to play the best opponents. I am so grateful to have all of your support, and I know the players are excited to show what your support has done for them come August 31 against Wagner.
Win the Day!
