Hoya Notes: From the Desk of Football Head Coach Kevin Kelly

Head Coach Kevin Kelly and the Hoyas prepare for the season-opener with Davidson on Sept. 3.

WASHINGTON - From The Desk of Georgetown Head Football Coach Kevin Kelly:

Dear family, friends and fans,

It has been an interesting training camp with the thunderstorms, an earthquake and now Hurricane Irene. Those things have been out of our control, but what has not been is the effort put forth by all of the players and coaches. Despite having to cut a few practices short everyone has worked extremely hard and the improvement from practice one to practice 23 has been clear.

The improvement we have seen throughout camp has been noticeable in our freshmen. I wrote a few months ago that everyone was excited to see them on the field and they have not let us down. Even with a strong group of upperclassmen several of the freshmen have earned the chance to play and will help us significantly during the 2011 season.

On Saturday, we held our first full scrimmage of training camp. These scrimmages are tough because you want to see the guys on both sides of the ball dominate. Without going into too much detail, I will say that the defense started out fast and the offense caught up and finished strong. I told the guys following the scrimmage that we made more big plays on offense than we have in the last six years.

Overall we saw very good things on both sides of the ball. However, it was a typical first scrimmage and we did see several mistakes, all that are correctable and are being worked on during this week and next leading up to our opener with Davidson.

Today, we will begin prep for Davidson, with Saturday and Sunday off before classes and game week begin on Monday. At this point, we're getting tired of beating up on each other. The offense and defense have become familiar with each other during the past two weeks, learning each others signals and checks, so we're looking forward to lining up against someone in a different uniform.

It will be great to start the season at home under the lights at Multi-Sport Field on Saturday, September 3 at 6 p.m. We hope to see all of you there supporting the Hoyas!

Win the Day!
