Senior Casey Kuhns will serve alongside Barnes and Akere as a captain on Saturday vs. Davidson

Sept. 1, 2016

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Football Head Coach Rob Sgarlata has announced that senior quarterback Tim Barnes (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) and junior defensive back David Akere (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron) will serve as the team captains for the entirety of the 2016 season.

"Tim and David have been selected by our players and coaches to serve as captains for the 2016 season,” Sgarlata said. “This is a process that started immediately after the completion of last season. Throughout spring practice, our summer program and this preseason, both Tim and David have embodied the characteristics of leadership valued by our program. I am extremely proud of them and we are very fortunate to have them as members of our program. I look forward to seeing them play on this season."

Barnes, the 2016 recipient of the No. 35 Joe Eacobacci Memorial Jersey, is set to begin his first season as GU’s starting quarterback after serving as the backup to Kyle Nolan for his first three years on the Hilltop. He has received playing time in each of his first three seasons, starting against Fordham as a freshman while seeing action in eight games as a sophomore and five as a junior last season. In 2015, Barnes entered the game at Bucknell and engineered a 94-yard touchdown drive against the league’s top defense, completing six passes for 62 yards while also rushing for six yards. Overall, in his three seasons, Barnes has played in 14 games, completing 27-of-56 pass attempts for 209 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for an additional 96 yards.

Akere has appeared in all 22 games, with 17 starts under his belt in his two years in a Georgetown uniform, making 98 tackles to go along with three interceptions. During his sophomore campaign in 2015, Akere was fourth on the team with 78 total tackles and tied for the team lead with two interceptions while breaking up three passes. He had two games last season with at least 10 tackles, recording 12, along with an interception, against Marist on September 12 before setting a new career high with 13 tackles, while also forcing a fumble, at Harvard on October 2. An excellent student in the classroom, Akere is a two-time Patriot League All-Academic Honor Roll selection.

In addition to the permanent captains, Sgarlata and his staff will select game captains on a weekly basis. These players will be chosen based on their actions both on and off the field.

“Throughout this preseason, we have challenged all of our players to serve as leaders,” Sgarlata said. “As we end our camp, I have been impressed with this group of student-athletes. The selection of weekly game captains allows us to highlight and honor players who have displayed the leadership characteristics valued by our program.”

The first player selected for this honor is senior linebacker Casey Kuhns (Greenwich, Conn./Taft). Kuhns, a two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, has seen action in 10 games over the past two seasons. He appeared in nine games as a junior in 2015, seeing time at both linebacker and special teams.

"Casey Kuhns is a great first selection as a game captain,” Sgarlata remarked. “He is an extremely hard worker who has made a tremendous positive impact for our program both on and off the field.”

The Hoyas open the 2016 season this Saturday, September 3 against Davidson. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Cooper Field. Tickets for Saturday and all of Georgetown’s six home games are available by visiting
