Sept. 2, 2016
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University football will open its 2016 season on Saturday afternoon, hosting Davidson College at Cooper Field. Kickoff is slated for 1:05 p.m.
Live stats will be available at www.guhoyas.com. The game will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network with Jeremy Huber, Emory Hunt and Mike Nebrich providing the call and Anna Tarullo reporting from the sideline. The pregame show will begin at 12:50 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Georgetown Football Facebook page.
The Hoyas enter their third season under Head Coach Rob Sgarlata, having seen a one-win improvement in each of his first two seasons. The Blue & Gray will look to senior quarterback Tim Barnes (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional), the 2016 recipient of the No. 35 Joe Eacobacci Memorial Jersey, to guide the offense and a strong core of veterans to lead the defense.
GU and Davidson are playing for the 12th time, with the Hoyas having won eight of the first 11 contests. Georgetown has won each of the past four meetings, including a 42-6 win most recently in 2013. Over the past five years, GU is 6-2 against teams from the Pioneer Football League (PFL), including a perfect 3-0 mark against Davidson. The Hoyas are 2-1 against the PFL under Sgarlata and this is his first matchup against the Wildcats.
GU In Season Openers
The Hoyas are 6-10 in season openers since 2000 and are looking for their first win in an opener under Sgarlata. The Blue & Gray is 3-0 against Davidson in season openers since 2010, including a 40-16 victory in the 2011 opener on the Hilltop.
Oh Captain, My Captain
On Thursday, Sgarlata announced that Barnes and David Akere (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron) will serve as the team captains for the entirety of the 2016 season. Additionally, Sgarlata and his staff will select game captains on a weekly basis. These players will be chosen based on their actions both on and off the field. Senior linebacker Casey Kuhns (Greenwich, Conn./Taft) is the first selection as game captain and will serve alongside Barnes and Akere against Davidson.
Senior linebacker Ty Williams (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), who suffered a career-ending spinal cord injury in last year's season opener at St. Francis (Pa.), will also serve as an honorary captain on Saturday.
The Wildcats are coming off of a 2-9 campaign in 2015 under Head Coach Paul Nichols. Davidson returns junior starting quarterback Taylor Mitchell who threw for 1,506 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Wildcats also return junior Ben Rowell, an All-PFL Second Team selection, who averaged 28.4 yards per kick return in 2015. Last season, Davidson averaged just 12.5 points per game and 241.2 yards per game while opponents scored 35.4 points per game on average.
Following Saturday's game vs. Davidson, the Hoyas will play their first road game next weekend, traveling to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to face another PFL foe -- Marist College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Last year, Georgetown defeated the Red Foxes, 34-7, in its home opener.
