Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Colgate running back J.B. Gerald hit receiver DeWayne Long on a half back option pass in the end zone with only six seconds remaining in the game and gave the defending Co-Patriot League Champion Raiders an opening day win, 20-19, over host Georgetown.  Colgate led almost the whole way through, until a one-yard touchdown run by Kim Sarin (So., Roseville, Minn. / Cretin-Derham) gave the Hoyas a 19 -14 lead.  A late interception by Maurice Banks (So., Clinton, Md. / Gwynn Park) seemingly sealed it for the Hoyas, but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the play backed Georgetown up to its own 11.  A drive of three runs and out set the stage for Colgate’s winning score.

Colgate scored on its first drive of the game on a one-yard touchdown run by Jamaal Branch.  The play was set up off a fourth and one play when quarterback Chris Brown rolled around the right side and kept it for a 27-yard keeper down to the Hoyas’ two-yard line.  The Colgate offense was stagnant for the rest of the half.  Georgetown’s offense was held scoreless in the first half. Three drives were stopped by Colgate, once after a GU fumble recovery in their own territory, and then the Hoyas were stopped twice late in the half.

Colgate opened the second half with a quick score on a Chris Brown keeper, set up by a 58-yard run by Joe Pinion.  The Hoyas offense came alive, down 14-0, with quarterbacks Andrew Crawford (Jr., Superior, Colo. / Fairview) and Alondzo Turner (Fr., Capitol Heights, Md. / Bladensburg) both showing their individual talents.  Turner added some excitement to the offense by taking the Hoyas downfield with an option offense that included 37 rushing yards by the first year quarterback.  The change of pace opened up the field for Crawford, who promptly capped off the 80-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown pass to fullback William Huisking (Sr., Allendale, NJ / Northern Highlands).  Soon thereafter Crawford hit Luke McArdle (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) on two long passes, the latter a 35-yard touchdown pass that appeared to tie the game.

Unfortunately for the Hoyas, the extra point was blocked.  After Sarin’s late touchdown run, the Hoyas were forced to go for two, which they were unable to convert, leaving the score 19-14.  This allowed the Raiders to capture the win by a single point with their final touchdown.

Georgetown stays in Patriot League play next weekend with a Saturday, September 13th, date at Holy Cross. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
