WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University football will open its 2017 season on Saturday, September 9 when it travels to Buies Creek, N.C. for a matchup against Campbell University. Kickoff at Barker-Lane Stadium is slated for 6 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com and the game will be broadcast live on the Big South Network with Chris Hemeyer and Jay Sonnhalter providing the call.
The Hoyas enter their fourth season under Head Coach Rob Sgarlata, and bring back a wealth of experience from the 2016 campaign. Georgetown returns 62 letterwinners from a season ago, including 26 seniors and 22 juniors.
The offense has nine starters back from last year's team, including a fifth-year senior at quarterback, two seniors at running back, three at tight end and four both on the offensive line and at wide receiver.
The defense, which led the Patriot League in scoring defense in 2016, returns eight starters including 2017 Preseason All-Patriot League selections J'V'on Butler (Melbourne, Fla./Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy) at linebacker and Khristian Tate (Warner Robins, Ga./Covenant Academy) at defensive line.
GU in Season Openers
The Hoyas are 7-10 in season openers since 2000 and are looking for their second-straight win in an opener under Sgarlata. The Blue & Gray has not won a road season opener since 2012 when it defeated Davidson, 35-14.
About the Matchup
While Saturday will be the first ever meeting between Georgetown and Campbell, the Hoyas are no stranger to the Pioneer Football League (PFL). The Blue & Gray are 12-3 against opponents from the PFL over the past 10 years, including a 4-1 mark under Sgarlata. The Hoyas went 2-0 against the PFL last season, including a 38-14 season-opening win over Davidson and a 20-17 victory at Marist.
The Camels, who were selected fifth in the PFL preseason poll, opened the 2017 season with a convincing 70-0 victory over Division III Methodist. Campbell jumped out to a 35-0 lead after the first quarter, scoring its first four touchdowns in different fashions -- rush, fumble recovery, pass, punt return. Daniel Smith and Anthony Robbins both saw time at quarterback last week, combining for 173 yards in the air and four touchdowns. Joshua Jones led the running attack with 111 yards and a touchdown, while Aaron Blockmon caught two passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. The Campbell defense forced four turnovers and registered five sacks.
Oh Captain, My Captain
For the second-consecutive season, the Hoyas have named quarterback Tim Barnes (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) and defensive back David Akere (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron) as the team captains. Both players were also selected as the 2017 recipients of the No. 35 Joe Eacobacci Memorial Jersey. Barnes, a fifth-year senior, will wear No. 35 on offense while Akere will wear it on defense. This is the first time that two Hoyas will wear the No. 35 in the 15 years that it has been a memorial jersey. Barnes, who wore the No. 35 last season, becomes just the second Hoya to earn the honor twice, joining Michael Ononibaku (2004-05).
Following Saturday's game at Campbell, the Hoyas will return home to the friendly confines of Cooper Field for their season opener on Saturday, September 16 against Marist College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
