WASHINGTON - Senior linebacker Robert McCabe (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern Prep) has been added to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List, an honor given annually to the most outstanding defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision. McCabe currently leads Division I FCS in tackles, averaging 13.6 per game, including double-digits in each of GU's five games this season.
"Rob has been an excellent football player for us throughout his career and has earned this recognition," Head Coach Kevin Kelly said. "First, he has great physical tools and he is the smartest football player that I've coached in my 28 years."
McCabe, the preseason Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, is already a two-time PL Defensive Player of the Week through the first five weeks of the 2012 season. He set a career-high in tackles with 17 in the Hoyas season-opening victory at Davidson and is now second in Georgetown history with 316 career tackles, behind former teammate Nick Parrish (349).
McCabe was a first team All-Patriot League selection in 2011 after moving from outside linebacker to inside linebacker prior to the season. McCabe broke the program's single-season record with 134 tackles, while also intercepting four passes, including a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The Sports Network also presents the Walter Payton, Jerry Rice and Eddie Robinson awards. The Payton Award honors the outstanding player in the FCS, the Rice Award goes to the FCS freshman of the year and the Robinson Award honors the FCS coach of the year.
