Hoya Notes: From the Desk of Football Head Coach Kevin Kelly

Hoya Notes - Post-Game Bucknell From The Desk of Kevin Kelly

Dear family, friends and fans,

We are all disappointed with the outcome of Saturday's game at Bucknell. We got off to a slow start and the early turnover deep in our territory certainly did not help matters. We struggled to run the football and on defense we gave up too many big passing plays and third down conversions. You can be sure that we have been working since Sunday to correct those problems.

Our special teams units did have a solid day and I was proud of the way our guys kept fighting after we fell behind, 28-0. As I said, we did not start well, but we did fight back and score 18 unanswered points and never played like we were out of the game.

Congratulations are in order for Jamal Davis who was named a Patriot League honorable mention after having 10 receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown on Saturday. Jamal had one of his best days as a Hoya and while none of us are surprised, we are pleased that he was recognized by the league.

During our team meeting on Sunday, we talked about several things. First, all of our team goals can still be met. We can still have a winning season. The way the Patriot League looks so far, we can still put ourselves in position to be playing for a league championship when we meet Lehigh on November 12. As we saw, achieving those goals will require a lot more work. The next step is how we prepare and play against Wagner on Saturday afternoon.

Wagner may be 1-4, but they have played a lot of close games with some very good football teams, so we are expecting a battle. It's also hard to forget how they kicked a 56 yard field goal and beat us in double overtime on our homefield last season. We will receive help from several players who will return this week from injury, especially across the offensive line.

For all of those who will be in attendance, we are looking forward to seeing you on Staten Island!

Win the Day!

Coach Kelly
