WASHINGTON - Senior defensive end Alec May (Wrenthem, Mass./King Phillip) has been named to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List for the Division I FCS Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year. May was added to the watch list on Tuesday morning by The Sports Network.
May has excelled during his senior season on the Hilltop, leading the FCS in sacks per game (1.5) and placing sixth in the nation in tackles for loss per game (1.9). His 138 tackles for loss yards leads the Patriot League and FCS. His 8.0 tackles per game is the leading total for an FCS defensive lineman.
"It's a great honor to be named to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List," May said. "I know about the award, it's a great award, and just to be on the list with all of the other great players is an honor."
Through 10 games May's 15.5 sacks is one-half sack short of Georgetown's single-season record of 16 set by Janne Kouri in 1996. He is 2.5 sacks shy of Andrew Hollingsworth's Patriot League record of 18 sacks set in 2000.
"It is an honor to have Alec named to Buck Buchanan watch list," Head Coach Rob Sgarlata said. "He has been a contributor to our defense from the time he stepped on campus as a freshman. He is a relentless player who plays 100 miles an hour in both practice and games."
May is a four-time Patriot League Weekly honorable mention this season and has also excelled in the classroom being named to the 2014 Campbell Trophy Watch List for the nation's premier scholar-athlete.
