Hoya Notes - Recognizing our Award Winners and Finishing the Job

From The Desk of Kevin Kelly

Dear family, friends and fans,

First, I hope everyone reading this note will join me in extending kudos to all of our post-season award winners. None of us on the Hilltop were surprised to see Andrew Schaetzke named an AFCA First Team All American and the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year. He has had a great career on the Hilltop and it was an honor well deserved. We were also pleased to have eight players selected All Patriot League first and second team, the most our program has ever seen, while Jeremiah Kayal and Wilburn Loganwere named Academic All Patriot League, a sign of the great work they do on the field and in the classroom. As for the Coach of the Year honors, I see that as a staff award, and as I've said before, we are very fortunate at Georgetown to have the great staff we have in place.

We are not content to rest on a successful 2011 season, as our motto going in to 2012 will be Finish The Job! We came within one game of achieving our ultimate goal of winning the Patriot League, so now we must do everything we can to accomplish that goal by pushing ourselves further in every facet of the game.

One of those facets is recruiting. It has been a busy few weeks, as our coaching staff and I just came back from the road on Friday after three weeks. Now the task becomes evaluating film and ranking our top prospects from the student-athletes we have spoken with and seen. First, our recruiting coordinator will organize all of the film and pass it down to the player's potential position coach. The position coaches will rank their players and then I will rank them and we'll average out those rankings, before sending out invitations for visits to campus for our top prospects. Preparation is underway for a couple big weekends coming up in mid-January.

Another facet will be conditioning. The players, who are just finishing up with final exams, will be back on January 11 and we'll have a meeting on January 12, a week before we begin our winter conditioning program. Between now and then Coach Carl Johnsonhas given each player workouts, so we can hit the ground running in preparation for spring ball, which begins on March 21. The bar has been raised and we all know that we will not sneak up on anyone in 2012.

Finally, I want to thank all of the fans and alumni for their tremendous support throughout the years and we hope you continue to follow our progress, as we prepare for the 2012 football season!

Happy Holidays!

Coach Kelly
