Andrew Schaetzke Named Walter Camp 2011 FCS All America First Team; Becomes Patriot League's Ninth Consensus All American

Andrew Schaetzke

Dec. 23, 2011

WASHINGTON - Senior defensive end Andrew Schaetzke (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) was named to the Walter Camp 2011 FCS All America First Team when honors were announced on Friday morning. The honor makes Schaetzke just the ninth consensus All-American in Patriot League history.

Schaetzke, previously named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, had a stellar senior season, leading the league in tackles for loss (22.5) and sacks (13), finishing sixth and eighth in the nation in those categories, respectively. He also had 69 tackles, one interception, five pass breakups, three quarterback hurries and three fumbles forced during the season.

The Walter Camp All America honor is one of many garnered by Schaetzke following his 2011 season. Earlier in the week he was named to the The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS All American team, after having already earned AP and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) recognition.

Schaetzke and the Georgetown defense helped turnaround the Hoyas football program, pushing the squad to an 8-3 season, while playing Lehigh for the Patriot League Championship on November 12. Individually, his 2011 season helped him climb the record books at Georgetown and also in the Patriot League. Schaetzke moved to second in GU history in career sacks (30.5) and third in Patriot League history.

Schaetzke becomes the Georgetown football program's first All-America selection since Michael Ononibaku, who earned second team honors in 2005 and the school's first consensus All American since joining the Division I FCS ranks in 1993.

Walter Camp, "The Father of American Football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp - a former Yale University athlete and football coach - is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation - a New Haven based all-volunteer group - was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting All-America teams for the Football Bowl and Championship subdivisions.
