Georgetown Men's Golf to Compete at Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate
April 2, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's golf team will continue its spring season this weekend when the Hoyas compete in the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate, being hosted by East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. The tournament will be held from April 3-5.
The Hoyas are coming off a ninth place finish at the Lacrosse Homes Invitational last weekend. It was one of two events the team played in during the week, as Head Coach Tommy Hunter sent a group of players to compete at the Lacrosse Homes Invitational and then an additional group played in the Patriot Invitational, hosted by George Mason.
Senior Garrett Logan (Henderson, Nev./Bishop Gorman) led the Hoyas to the ninth place showing at the Lacrosse Homes Invitational, tying for 19th place overall at 7-over par 223. Logan has posted two top-20 finishes, including one in the top-10, this season. He is second on the team in stroke average at 75.39.
The Hoya lineup this weekend should include Logan, as well as senior classmate Tim Hager (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North), junior Vincenzo Salina (Vandoeuvres, Switzerland/Institut Florimont), freshman Brian Dorfman (Greenwood Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) and senior Patrick Sherry (Brookeville, Md./Landon).
Salina tied for 12th place at 4-over par 146 at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate, Georgetown's first event of the spring season. The junior has four top-20 finishes and one top-10 in seven outings during the 2008-09 season. He leads the team with a 74.89 stroke average.
Hager, a two-year captain who has been among the team's top-five players during the last three years, has struggled in his first two outings of the spring, finishing in a tie for 78th place at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate (14-over par 156) and tying for 56th place (18-over par 234) at the Lacrosse Homes Intercollegiate. Overall this year, Hager is third on the team with a 75.89 stroke average.
Dorfman has played in every event during his first year on the Hilltop. He opened the spring with a tie for 14th place at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate, carding a 5-over par 147. In seven events this year, he is fourth on the team with a 75.94 stroke average.
The final spot this weekend should be filled by Sherry, a senior who made his first appearance in the lineup of the spring season last weekend. Sherry shot an 18-over par 234 and tied for 56th place.
The event at East Carolina will only be the third event of the spring season for the Hoyas, who had their opening event of the season, the Lonnie Campbell Intercollegiate at Campbell University, postponed due to snow in February.
On Monday, five Georgetown players competed in the Patriot Invitational. Sophomore Brandon Ellis (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) tied for ninth place at 15-over par 159, while junior Trevor Matese (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) tied for 14th place at 19-over par 163, sophomore Danny Hathway (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) tied for 18th place at 20-over par 164, while junior Rory Kenny (Glenview, Ill./Loyola Academy) tied for 20th place at 21-over par 165 and senior Andrew Osofsky (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields) tied for 26th place at 26-over par 170.
